I also had occasion to see our community’s newest hero in
action. Wayne Wettlaufer, MPP in Kitchener, the man who gave us Bill 28 and
thus German Pioneers Day, took time out of his very busy schedule to have
lunch and show us around Queens Park. Seeing him in session while he
commended a young girl for her courage in saving lives when the house was
burning was a treat itself.
When we see this sort of thing on TV the atmosphere is quite
different. It is impossible to smell and taste the history of this building,
unless one is there. Even disruptive behaviour by political opponents, and
newspaper reading representatives cannot take away from the feeling that the
whole thing is set up like a game with a set of rules that are not known to
all, yet have a long tradition. At times there is a real spirit of play
apparent, and I do not mean this in a negative sense, quite the contrary.
Grave things are met with grave importance, if necessary, the protocol
demands it. There seems to be a great deal of protocol anyway, all a bit old
and dusty, if you ask me. But that is why the sometimes irreverent behaviour
of the MPPs seems a bit incongruous. I walked away with the conviction that
one must be very bright, quick and persistent and even cunning to get
anything through this system. So when we elect someone into office to
represent us we need to take this into account, or else we send the wrong
people.
