Hans J. Sandker, President of the German Canadian Choir Association (GCCA)President of the German Canadian Choir Association (GCCA) Hans J. Sandker congratulated the Germania Choirs as the oldest choir in this organization. It was founded as a male choir in 1864 and laid the Robert Bratina, Mayor of Hamilton, and wife; Hedda Wagenblast, President of the Germania Choirs; Walter Stechel, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germanybasis for a German club not much later the same year. That is 3 years prior to the British North American Act, or now called the Constitution act of 1867 and thus considered Canada’s Birthday on July 1st.

To celebrate this enormously important event two years of preparation led to a two day celebration. On Saturday May 17th a festive gala took place in the Germania Club with many special guests.

Linus Press, the conductor, has been with the choir for 45 years and deserves special congratulations for holding the choir together and making it sound wonderful. He never not held a regular rehearsal. That makes all together 1,980 rehearsals and many extra ones as needed in all those years, according to Ingrid Oppermann, who chronicled the choir history in the program.
