February 2016 - Nr. 2

Dear Reader

Surely you are wondering why we have a winter photo on the front page, because this is not an accurate interpretation of reality, yet it is a timely one. I just want us to appreciate what we are having. This winter was mild, except for a few days and nights, which made it easy on the heating bill. That is definitely something to be grateful for. We did not have to bundle up in heavy clothing, which made taking walks more pleasurable.

When we had to decide what to put onto the front page we did not have many choices. There was not much that went on in the community, so pictures are a rarity this month; which meant that we had to search our archives. There was a photo of unbelievable ice flowers I had taken years ago and we had used already a couple of times, with big red hearts drawn over it, since it is Valentine’s Day in February.

And then we found this lovely shot, a father with his daughter taking a walk with their dog. I had asked them for permission to take the photo from my porch. They look so cozy and loving together, that we thought this might be the right sentiment for Valentines Day and at the same time be a reminder about what we are missing this year, whether we like it or not.

A lot of our local folks are out on a cruise this time around, either with Knut Sturm or Ulli Jeschke. Perhaps they think that we are freezing while they are having a good time in subtropical areas. Little do they know that this last Sunday we had spring-like conditions outside. It felt quite pleasant without wind. The birds were chattering and came around in big flocks, as though this was their first visit back from a bit further south. We could not put out enough bird feed. It disappeared so quickly.

So much for the home front. The clubs were quiet in January, except for minor public events. The most important one was a meeting of the minds in the Hansa Club with the regional clubs and cultural organisations under the leadership of the German Consul General, Mr. Walter Stechel. The meeting was well visited, by more people then the first one six month ago. You can read more about it in this issue.

March will be much busier and we hope to see a lot of you at the various venues.

Have a lovely
