Our last front page in February was a prophesy it seems. Winter
did finally arrive with snow to the delight of many children.
And while it is still on the ground as I am writing this, I know
it will disappear and make room for spring-like conditions. It
even smells of spring. The roof is almost clear of the white
stuff and the icicles are also dripping their substance to the
ground. If this trend keeps up, we might have greener grass for
Easter long enough to hide a few eggs in the garden.
I am slowly revving up for all things spring. The last vestments
of Christmas are disappearing in storage boxes; like the
beautiful angels I always have a hard time parting with. Instead
I am sifting through other boxes where I hope to find my Easter
decorations; and while I am doing this I realize that this
household has way too many things for each season. A reduction
of seasonal décor items is defiantly in the stars, especially
since there are no children coming around anymore. I guess this
too is a sign of “getting old”. We reduce instead of add.
There was this commentary on TV about the state of our society.
It was posed that we used to be a “society of enough”. By that
was meant that we lived in a way that we had enough food, enough
money to have an extra pair of shoes, enough to get a car, to
acquire a house, go on a vacation and so on. Now we are a “more
society”. We want more of everything that we used to consider
enough in the past. And I say, as we get older we say “too
Of course there are always items we cannot ever get enough of,
like nice letters and cards, almost a thing of the past with all
the electronics abounding, or quality communications, or Easter
Eggs, of course. There is simply no such thing as too much when
it comes to expressions of love and respect, but there is
definitely a thing like too many complaints and criticisms.
Did we not say: everybody is a comedian? Well, all that bitching
is not funny anymore. I say: Enough!
Easter is an occasion for a renewal, for fresh beginnings, for
growth in the right direction. So I wish that with every Easter
egg we nosh our potential for being nice grows, doubles,
quadruples, whatever it takes to bring back peace and quiet into
You are saying: Good luck with that? Well, I can dream, can’t I?
Besides some dreams come true if you wish fervently enough!
