May 2016 - Nr. 5
After 6 years of total silence from the German Canadian
Congress Ontario (Deutsch Kanadischer Kongress/DKK) the umbrella
organisation that speaks for all German Canadians, so their
promotional material, appeared again with a big splash.
Germanica 2016 honoured 8 recipients with the Heritage Award in
the German Canadian Club Hansa. The event was in the planning
since late last year and came together nicely. Our front page
reflects some of the colourful scenes from the event. There is a
report of the evening inside the paper and a lot more photos. As
co-founder and past board member of the congress I took great
interest in the development of the organisation that originally
had no membership in Kitchener, where it ultimately found a
quite permanent home and leadership, especially under Ernst
Friedel, who spent a great deal of his personal and financial
energy for its cause, and is doing so again after a time of
absence due to illness.
As we are making this edition ready for the printer I noticed an
ad from Catherine McKay for the month of May of last year. It
read: “With summer on the way…”. Really, we were talking about
summer already at the end of April? Gosh, spring has not even
arrived everywhere for real this year. Yes, daffodils and tulips
are out, but somewhat stunted in their growth, there are no
flowering tress yet and only some trees like the weeping willows
have the tiniest show of small leafs. I have not put my winter
stuff away and the spring and summer clothing are still resting
in their winter hiding places.
I have planted pansies into the window boxes and I am waiting to
buy some fillers for when the hot weather finally arrives.
Summer tubers have not been planted yet and the last of the
evergreen branches need to be put away in paper bags to be
picked up for
mulching. The yard has all sorts of accumulations
of unwanted items. Spring cleaning is definitely a must.
I need some help and will call Ken at Bismark Estate Services,
who is incredibly helpful with all sorts of chores involving
spring cleaning and fixing. He can be reached 24/7 at
I will think of my mother and all the mothers that are revered,
adored and loved, past, present and future!
Happy Mothers Day!
