Letter from the Editor
Dear Reader
How horrid! Election time is upon us and once again; not once, but 2 times in short succession. What this means is clear to all of us: Decisions have to be made.
I am restraining myself from making comment this time, but would like to point out that the all too apparent point of view that one voice alone cannot do anything is wrong. It is a bit frightening that at least federally we do not really have a three party system anymore. Provincially it is a touch better, but still too weak. That means that the choices we have to make are based on who will win, not on who should win.
Perhaps
it would be good to have someone as the official opposition who actually
still has the best interest of our future at heart. Perhaps it would be good
to push some power in a green direction, not to make them win, but to divide
the power a little differently and to thus to make the existing powers pull
up their bootstraps.
Another point to be pondered is based in old wisdom: It is better to deal with an "enemy" one knows than an unknown entity. If you translate that into voting for either the party that is in power now or the individuals who have no experience in governing then you get my drift.
At the same time it is important to distribute the power in such a way that the party that wins can be kept ‘honest’. Forgive the oxymoron.
So consider carefully who and what we need collectively for our future to be a good one.
Enough said.
I hope you have noticed our front page. We put it together last minute in our garden and did not have to wait long at all for my pet squirrel to show up to share the plenty with us. With all the rain in the forecast I thought you might like something cheerful to look at, especially since we are having a four-colour edition this month.
The cheerfulness also is a desirable kick off for yet another German Festival in Toronto, Kitchener and Hamilton. It all starts on the Day of German Unity on October 3rd in the Roy Thomson Hall, where the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany is giving a reception prior to a fabulous concert of German music under the baton of Sir Andrew Davies. The Annual German Gala Ball ends this month of festivities that was cleverly put together mostly with events that would happen anyway, but bunched and presented like this create a wonderful impact. The message is clear: Hallo Canada, look at Germany as a viable partner in business, art & culture, and tourism. Discover what we have in common, realize what you have already enjoyed for so long but perhaps never credited Germany as a nation for or Germans as valid, interesting, resourceful and creative counterparts to your own agendas, locally or abroad, I might want to ad.
Anyway, the program is very varied and holds something for anyone, except football fans, which were pleased last year. Mostly the program concentrates on musical presentations of all kinds, including the modern approach with a Techno D.J. Summit featuring Paul van Dyk and Deep Dish.
This means nothing to me, but I heard from young folks that Paul is the cat’s meow, as we would have said in our day.
