TWIG - The cast of US actor-turned-director Robert De Niro’s The Good Shepherd was awarded a silver bear at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival on Saturday. The Cold War era story tells the tale of the early days of the US Central Intelligence Agency. Starring Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie, the sometimes slow-moving film focuses on how a young agent essentially sacrifices his family and private life for the sake of his CIA work. German-born Martina Gedeck, who also stars in the film, said in accepting the prize that it would be dedicated to the 63-year-old De Niro. At the same time, Tuya’s Marriage (Tu ya de hun
shi), by Chinese director Wang Quan’an, won the Berlinale’s coveted
Golden Bear on Saturday for best film, further underscoring the emergence of
Asia as a major force in global cinema.
