German Films at the 50th San Francisco International Film Festival

Nine German films and co-productions will be screened at the 50th annual San Francisco International Film Festival from April 26 to May 10. Founded in 1957, it is the oldest continuously held film festival in the United States, and one of the most diverse and highly regarded film events in the country.

Three German productions already have a reason to celebrate. Four out of a total of 14 Golden Gate Awards were decided in the run-up to the festival, including "My Father the Turk" (Mein Vater der Türke), by Ariane Riecker and Marcus Vetter, for long-form television documentary. A short-form television documentary award will go to "Josephine Baker - Black Diva in a White World" (Schwarze Diva in einer Weissen Welt) by Anette von Wangenheim. And "Rage"(Wut), by Zueli Aladag, has won in the category of long-form television narrative.

Meanwhile the new directors section will be presenting "Emma's Bliss" (Emmas Glück) by Sven Taddicken, "Suely in the Sky" by Karim Aïnouz (BR/DE/FR/PT) and "Rome Rather than You" by Tariq Teguia (DZ/FR/DE). The documentary "The Rape is Europe" by Nicole Newnham (US/FR/IT/AU/DE/PL/RU) has also been selected to compete for a Golden Gate Award. The world cinema section will be showing the US-German co-production "Fay Grim" by Hal Hartley, and the short "Whirr" by Timo Katz will be screened in one of the festival's shorts programs.
