Opera In Concert's Thirty-Fourth Season
Toronto...Opera lovers always expect the
unexpected from Opera in Concert and the company's thirty-fourth season is
no exception. Sensational Opera in Concert alumni, startling new talents,
surtitles projections and operas both revered and legendary come together on
the newly renovated St. Lawrence Centre's Jane Mallett Theatre stage for a
remarkable operatic feast beginning Sunday, October 28, 2007, 2:30 pm with
Donizetti's ANNA BOLENA. Music Director Nathalie Doucet-Lalkens leads from
the piano and Robert Cooper directs the Opera n Concert Chorus. The cast
includes newcomer Lara Ciekiewicz in the title role, Anita Krause as Jane
Seymour, Stuart Howe as Percy and Sean Watson as Rochefort. The tragedy of
Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour is brought searingly to life by Donizetti at
the height of his bel canto powers.
Following on Sunday, December 2, 2007, is a
remarkable collaboration by the young Mahler and Carl Maria von
Weber...separated by 70 years! DIE DREI PINTOS, Weber's comic tale of 'the
three Pintos', was completed by the arch romantic Gustav Mahler in 1888 and
has fascinated lovers of both early and late romantic opera. Led from the
piano by Robin Wheeler, Eric Shaw, debuting Jesse Clark and Sean Watson vie
for a lady's hand.
Handel's TAMERLANO deals with the abuse of power,
deception and nobility of character during the tumultuous events surrounding
the fall of the legendary Ottoman Emperor Bajazet at the hands of
Tamburlaine. Kevin Mallon leads the Aradia Ensemble and a sterling cast
which includes Lynne McMurtry as Tamerlano, Marcel Van Neer as Bajazet, and
debuting artists Shannon Mercer as Asteria and counter-tenor Scott Belluz as
Andronicus in one performance at the Jane Mallett Theatre on Sunday, January
28, 2008.
Opera in Concert's season comes to a close with
Rimsky Korsakov's THE SNOW MAIDEN, said to be the composer's favourite among
his operatic opus. Raisa Nakhmanovich, noted for her authority in the
Russian repertoire leads from the piano and the cast is likewise
authoritative in the Russian idiom with Katerina Tchoubar, Luiza Zhuleva,
Sasha Bataligin and Neil Aronoff, along with Robert Cooper and the Opera in
Chorus. One performance, Sunday, April 6, 2008.
