Important Step Toward Education Reform

TORONTO - Applied Scholastics, an organization dedicated to bringing literacy to the community held a Grand Opening to announce their new premises on Pape & Danforth Ave this Saturday, 7 April 1001.

Ribbon cutting at Applied ScholasticsTo mark the occasion, an official ribbon cutting was done by Ms. Pamela Appelt, retired Citizenship judge and Patron of Women for P.A.C.E. (Project for the Advancement of Childhood Education). Ms. Appelt is Canada’s first female Afro Canadian judge and is actively involved in many community projects.

She stated "Organizations such as Applied Scholastics are vital to help our young people gain the skills they need to succeed in their lives."

The Executive Director of Applied Scholastics Canada, Elizabeth Zahari, said "in view of the current alarming statistics from the Grade 10 student’s poor results in literacy tests, this is cause for not only great concern but effective action. Applied Scholastics has proven methods that get results."

Applied Scholastics and Education Alive, who tutored and trained hundreds of students in the Pape/Danforth area for many years, are delighted to be back and are now In their new premises at 678A Pape Ave. Education Alive tutors all subjects but specializes in teaching reading, grammar and also study & dictionary skills for students of all ages. The new Training Centre at Applied Scholastics has courses available to teachers, parents and students as well as those in the community who wish to establish literacy programs.

A 16 year old student at Applied Scholastics at one point had been 3 grades behind in his reading and was able to catch up within one school year. His mother stated "Without the study methods used, particularly the clearing of definitions, he would still be behind. Now he is confident and happy and this makes me very happy too."

Ms Zahari went on to say that teachers need more tools to cope with modern situations in the classrooms and the Applied Scholastics study methods supply that need using the effective study technology of author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard.

According to Dr. Bruce Flattery, Associate Professor of English at York University, "At the university level, we see far too many students who have not been taught to think for themselves and, recently, more and more who have been labelled in ways that make them believe that they will not be able to. Students who know and use the study methods, on the other hand really understand what they are learning, can question information and come up with new solutions. It’s clear to me that Study Technology produces social leaders and labelling produces more social problems."
