Dear Reader Summer is not over yet. The weather has been outstanding for everyone but the farmers, who need quite a bit of different climate to make conditions ideal for them. However, sunshine and dry warmth benefit the tourist trade and also open-air events such as the Alpine Fest at the Canadian National Exhibition. This year’s "German" instalment appears to have been the most successful of all the various band shell festivities. No doubt the CNE was pleased with the turnout and that could mean that it might happen again next year. The good weather is supposed to continue well into September, which bodes well for our lake cruise on the River Gambler. Good food, served on real china, no plastic for us, and entertainment await us. What we were lacking in moisture other parts of the world got too much of. China is drowning and so was most of Europe. The damage to life and goods, buildings, including architectural treasures, railroads and other infrastructures is still immeasurable. Many initiatives have been started the world over to help our friends abroad. For direct help in Germany it is a good idea to go to the Dresden website www.dresden.de , where you will find all sorts of information concerning the city and the flood. Here in Canada the German World Congress instituted a relief account through a lawyer especially for the purpose of helping Dresden. Any donations should be made out to Polten &Hodder in Trust of German World Congress "2002 Dresden Flood Relief Fund" at the following address:
This money goes straight to Dresden. The Austrian Society also arranged for a relief fund in Austria, but is using the Red Cross as a channel. For information how you can make your donation to Austria’s relief fund please call Mrs. Piller at 416-427-5510 or call President Christine Meyer at 416-928-1400. Read about some personal experiences from our correspondent in Dresden Antje Steiger. In the meantime enjoy what is left of the summer here. Winter will come soon enough and last too long, as usual. There is much to do, like the Toronto Film Festival, which always has a few good European entries. Until next time Sybille Forster-Rentmeister Comments to: editor@echoworld.com |
