TWIG - German tennis champion Boris Becker has been selected for induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, organization officials announced Tuesday (January 28). Born in 1967 in Leimen (Baden-Württemberg), Becker shot to stardom in 1985 by seizing the Wimbledon championship at age 17 years, 7 months. He was the youngest man ever to win a major tennis tournament at the time. The six-foot-three-inch redhead went on to win two more Wimbledon championships, two Australian Opens, a U.S. Open and six Grand Slam singles titles. Becker played Davis Cup for Germany from 1985 to 1999, leading the country to victory in 1988 and 1989. When notified of his selection for the hall of fame, Becker said he was both honored and delighted. "It has always been my dream to be a part of this honorable institution and I will treat my membership with great respect," he added. Becker will be inducted during a ceremony on July 12 in Newport.
