130 Years Concordia Club |
||
by Herwig Wandschneider
The Hall was jam-packed as the Concordia Club celebrated its 130th anniversary in style. Mind you, it is always jam-packed on anniversaries. Not only is the event celebrated in style with dance, awards, entertainment and performances, it is also the best deal in town according to Werner Schlueter, President. And right he is, which is why tickets to this event are hard to come by. The Concordia Choir - the organization, which was originally behind the founding of the Club in 1873 - performed under the direction of Dr. Alfred Kunz. As always, the choir is a joy to hear, and their performance whether at the Club or at other events, such as the recent three-country slide and music presentation at the University of Waterloo, was impressive. The choir also awarded the one member winning the top award this year - honorary membership in the Club - for outstanding volunteer support and dedication to the Club, past president Elisabeth Rowsell. It was a pleasure to the eyes and to the ears to have Ms. Rowsell seated in front of the male choir, elegantly dressed, with a bouquet of roses on her lap, and the full voices of the choir dedicated to her alone. Awards were also presented for 50-year memberships to 3 members, 40-year to 14 members, 25-year to 5 members and 10-year to 24 members. No doubt, though, that the highlight of the awards was the emotional choir-backed ceremony of awarding the honorary membership to Elisabeth Rowsell. Another highlight was the performance of the Club’s dance group, which gave a presentation of the group’s abilities South-American style. The event was competently MC’d by Sarah Allmendinger. Stimmungs-Musik for dance and entertainment was provided by the Golden Keys. They played till well after midnight until even the last enthusiastic dancers were ready to call it a night.
