"White Rose" |
||
Between 1942-1943 a group of courageous and defiant University of Munich students formed an anti-fascist resistance movement and named it White Rose. Under great personal danger, the students wrote and circulated seven leaflets across Germany in protest against Hitler’s regime, were found out, jailed and executed by the Nazis. World renowned composer Udo Zimmermann’s White Rose(Weisse Rose), will be performed for 2 voices and 15 piece orchestra conducted by Sabatino Vacca. Direction and production is by Judy Kopelow. The story is of brother and sister Hans and Sophie Scholl, leaders of the White Rose resistance group, who were arrested while distributing protest leaflets on February 18, 1943 sentenced to death on February 22, 1943 and executed that same day. The setting is the Munich-Stadelheim Prison, hours before their execution. Hans was 25 years old and Sophie 22 years old when they were sentenced to death for their resistance activities. A discussion will follow with Dr. George (Jurgen) Wittenstein, the only survivor of the White Rose resistance group. For more information on the program call (416)787-1060. Tickets: $25.
