TWIG - The weekly tabloid Bunte has named German first lady Doris Schroeder-Koepf its "Woman of the Year" for her work helping today’s youth. Calling Schroeder-Koepf a role model for everyone in Germany, Bunte publisher Hubert Burda praised the Chancellor’s wife for her unrelenting efforts to promote several social programs for young people. Magazine editors applauded Schroeder-Koepf’s initiative "Numbers against worries," a telephone hotline for children and adolescents that receives as many a 10,000 calls a day from young people. Schroeder-Koepf was also honored for her affiliation with the 2004 project "Germany Reads Out Loud," a literacy campaign sponsored by the Koerber Foundation that brought prominent people into German schools and libraries for book readings. At Schroeder-Koepf’s wishes, the celebration in Berlin’s glamorous Hotel Adlon in her honor was used as a platform to bring attention to projects helping young people affected by the tsunami in Southeast Asia. The Bunte has previously honored CDU leader Angela Merkel (2002) and the fashion designer Jil Sander (2003). Schroeder-Koepf, born in the Bavarian town of Neuburg an der
Donau, worked for many years as a political correspondent for radio and
print, including a stint at Bild, arguably Germany’s most influential
daily tabloid. She married Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in 1997.
