Picnic at the Hansa Haus |
||
Practically perfect weather, with a slight breeze, made this an ideal day to have the annual picnic. The days of flooding and Tornado-warnings all around the region were over – it was time to celebrate in the good weather for a change. Attendance was at an all-time high, even better than last year. A soccer game by North Upper Mississauga and Erin Mills also drew a crowd of fans. It ended with a 5:2 for Mississauga. Well done! Food was plentiful and of the best quality – Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes) galore and almost everyone there tried some. It is a treat one doesn’t often find. I didn’t hear any complaints about the delicious cold beer either. The ‘dynamic duo’ Boe and Guy did their best to keep it flowing.
The Visitors The next big event is the two-day Oktoberfest with the ‘Musikkapelle Markt Erkheim’. That group of musicians hails from the Allgäu and is currently on tour in North America. This band was already mentioned in church records in the year 1754 and celebrated its 250th anniversary last year, with a major international music-festival with 16,000 attendees and 46 bands including some bands from France and Switzerland. For the last 37 years the band annually hosted the ‘Erkheimer Volksfest’ plus plays at 45 to 50 public concerts. Members of the band have been touring North America and the world about ten times in the past. They have been to Texas, Florida, California, Pennsylvania, Mexico, Spain and Canada. On this tour they will play at the Hansa Haus "Oktoberfest" on Friday, the 23rd of September and in the German club in Guelph the next day, while we will enjoy the wonderful sound of the ‘Panzergrenadiere’ – the ‘Harmonie Brass Show Band’ – on that Saturday, the 24th of September - in the Hansa Haus. The ‘Erkheimers’ will travel around Southern Ontario and Muskoka before trekking to Galveston, Texas and a cruise to Progresso, Cozumel, Mexico and Belize City. Needless to say they will also celebrate Oktoberfest aboard the cruise ship.
