INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL FILM & VIDEO FESTIVALNovember 1 to 5, 2006 Toronto, ON - October 2, 2006 ... Planet in Focus International Environmental Film & Video Festival will launch a new Spotlight Program at its 7th annual festival November 1-5, 2006. The retrospective, Toronto in the Moving Image Since the Dawn of Cinema to the Present will portray the City of Toronto as an evolving work in progress as recorded through the cinematic lens. The new program will be a point of departure for public discussion and debate about the urban environment revealing life within Toronto and include future projections about our local habitat. Changes to the built, natural, social and creative fabric of the city will be viewed through the lens of the silent cinema through to the recent idiosyncratic works of Peter Lynch, Rubba Nada, Ron Mann and their contemporaries. Planet in Focus will also include a panel on Toronto- The Price of Growth which will be moderated by former mayor, David Crombie. It will look at a myriad of issues facing the city at this moment and will examine the positive and negative aspects of its growth, with a view toward forward looking strategies and solutions. Activist singer Sarah Harmer will also participate on a panel following the screening of the film Escarpment Blues, which laments the potential destruction of the Niagara Escarpment and rallies forces towards preservation of the Greenbelt. Global urban concerns will be featured alongside other environmental issues in animated films, edgy documentaries, and dramas that make up the range of compelling Canadian and international works from Azerbaijan, Australia, Bhutan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, India, Italy, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Palestine, Russia, Senegal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, U.S.A. and Zambia. Planet in Focus promotes and celebrates the use of film and video across Canada and internationally as a catalyst for public awareness, discussion and appropriate action on the environmental, ecological and social health of the planet. Its year round programming and its annual festival have entertained and informed audiences about the most critical environmental issues of our times. For further information call (416) 531-4689 or visit our website at www.planetinfocus.org.
