“The greatest operetta of
them all”
Toronto …
DIE FLEDERMAUS (The Revenge of the Bat) by Johann
Strauss will be presented in a full production at the St.
Lawrence Centre opening on Dec. 28 with subsequent
performances on Dec 29, 31, 2010 & Jan. 2 (mat), 5, 7,
8, 9 (mat), 2011. “DIE FLEDERMAUS is the undoubted
masterpiece of Operetta’s Golden Age in Vienna” said TOT’s
General Director Guillermo Silva-Marin, “and it is always
a pleasure to revisit this wonderful score, especially with our
cast of remarkably gifted young Canadian vocalists.”
Debuting soprano Laura Albino stars as Rosalinde,
wife of the philandering Eisenstein, sung by tenor
Adam Luther in his TOT debut. Both these artists are
familiar to Toronto audiences from their appearances as members
of the COC Ensemble. Another debutante is soprano Lucia
Cesaroni as the saucy maid, Adele. Ms. Cesaroni
recently wowed audiences in Victoria in THE RAKE’S PROGRESS. A
TOT favorite, Keith Klassen returns as Alfred, the
tenor with the killer high ‘C’ and young Gregory Finney
will be featured as the bored Russian Prince Orlovsky.
Dr. Flake, our man with vengeance in mind, will be sung
by debuting baritone Andrew Rethazi and Mark Petracchi will be
heard as the Prison Warden Frank. A guest appearance will
be made by TOT’s own Guillermo Silva-Marin in the role of
the jailer, Frosch. The COC’s Derek Bate conducts
the TOT orchestra and Silva-Marin does double duty as
stage director.
DIE FLEDERMAUS premiered at Theatre an der Wien in 1874 and by
1880 had been produced in more than 170 German-language
theatres. Based on a French farce, Le réveillon, the
operetta is an unequalled coupling of Viennese musical charm and
Parisian parody. Audiences the world over look forward to
“Champagne’s delicious bubbles”, Rosalinde’s fiery “Czardas”,
Adele’s “My Dear Marquis” and the brilliant “Sing to Love
Finale” as well as waltzes, and polkas that adorn each of the
three acts.
New Year’s Eve Revels take place in true Viennese fashion with
Champagne, Dinner and Dancing at the HotHouse Café on December
31. Tickets to the performance must be purchased separately.
Subscription packages are available with savings of up to 25
