Trojan Horse Rises in Braunschweig

TWIG - A team of craftsmen in Braunschweig have just put the finishing touches on a 45-foot-tall, 45-ton replica of the fabled Trojan Horse. The enormous equine was created to accompany a major exhibit on Troy, Anja Hesse, director of the city’s Institute of Culture, explained to reporters this week. It will soon be dismantled and shipped to Stuttgart, where the show opens on March 14. On July 14 both the exhibit and the horse move back to Braunschweig for a three-month stay.

Like its ancient Greek predecessor, the wooden colossus has enough room inside to hide thirty people. According to Homeric legend, the original Trojan horse was the brainchild of the Greek hero Odysseus, who used it to smuggle his men inside the gates of Troy, conquer the city, and return the victor of the Trojan War. More information on the exhibition is available at www.troia.de . ( arts / culture )
