TWIG - Hollywood’s big-name stars have already taken home their Academy Awards this year, but the Oscars aren’t over yet. On June 10, the American Academy of Motion Pictures will be handing out its student prizes, and once again a German student will be in the running for best foreign film. Twenty-four-year-old Johannes Weiland from the Film Academy of Baden-Wuerttemberg has been nominated for a student Oscar for his animated feature Hessi James, the academy announced Friday (April 27). Weiland’s picture took top honours last year at the Effects and Animation Festival in London. In 2000, the foreign Student Academy Award went to Florian Gallenberger (29) of Munich, who also earned a full-fledged Oscar for Best Short Feature with his film Quiero Ser. German film students also managed to snag the student Oscar in 1997, 1998 and 1999. Weiland will travel to the awards ceremonies in Beverly Hills next month and meet fellow Oscar nominees from the Netherlands, France, Mexico and Poland. The group will have the chance to watch Hollywood directors at work during a week-long tour of the studios. |
