Billions for Leipzig and Rostock’s Olympic Bid
TWIG - The German federal government will provide Leipzig (Saxony) and Rostock (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), Germany’s candidates to host the 2012 Olympic games and sailing competitions, with 3.65 billion euros in infrastructure funding. Federal transport minister Manfred Stolpe announced Monday (May 5) that the money would go toward building transportation links in and around the eastern German city and the Baltic Sea port town to its north. Moreover, a new rail line that will cut travel time between Berlin and Leipzig to under an hour, is to be completed by 2005. By the time Germany hosts the soccer World Cup in 2006, several major new roads in and around Leipzig will also have been completed, said the minister. In short, Germany will do all it can to ensure that Leipzig and Rostock are the best possible options for the 2012 Olympic games.
