Germany Ranks Third in Immigration

TWIG - Germany has the world’s third-highest number of legal immigrants, after the United States and Russia, according to a report released Tuesday (June 10) by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Geneva. The U.S. has 35 million immigrants, Russia 13.3 million and Germany 7.3 million, according to the report. Some 175 million people, or one in every 35, are living outside the country in which they were born. Nearly half of all immigrants are women, the IOM study shows, and the main reason for migration today is the desire for better economic conditions. Between 1970 and 1995, the countries that produced the most emigrants were Mexico, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
