... by Listening to the People of TorontoToronto, November 9, 2004 - The Toronto Branding Project Team announces the kick-off today of a seven week public outreach program to get Torontonians involved in the making of the Toronto Brand. "We Are Toronto" is an all out effort to engage, listen to and consult with the people of Toronto.Over the next seven weeks, Torontonians will have the opportunity to answer seven thought-provoking questions about the city…a different one each week. Their ideas will be captured from now until mid-December either on the specially designed web site www.wearetoronto.ca, by the We Are Toronto Street Teams who will be visiting neighbourhoods all across the city or by mailing in postcards. Everyone across the city will be encouraged to participate. The Toronto Branding Project’s purpose is to create a distinct and dynamic image for the city that will speak to tourism, business investment and the meetings and conventions sectors on a local, national and international level. The new brand will help to promote Toronto as a wonderful place to visit and do business. And who better to help define those desirable attributes than the people of Toronto? The First Question is: What is your vision for the future of Toronto? Every great city has great ambitions. What do you want Toronto to be? Members of Toronto’s theatre and performing arts community kicked off the public consultation phase by answering the first question of the campaign. Their answers can also be found on the web site – www.wearetoronto.ca
Answers include: "I see Toronto continuing to be a leader in all artistic endeavours, especially in film production which will create opportunities for me and my peers," said Reon Lucas, Toronto-based, up and coming actor. "Toronto takes centre stage as a leader in the performing arts and Torontonians embrace a lifestyle change that incorporates arts and culture into their daily lives," said Jacoba Knaapen, Executive Director, Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA). "I would like a multi-cultural, diverse city which protects its small and innovative theatre," Tea Cheney, set painter in Toronto’s movie industry. The Toronto Branding Project is a partnership initiative of Tourism Toronto, the City of Toronto, The Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation and the Toronto City Summit Alliance. The public consultation phase of the Branding Project will be completed by late December. Brand implementation is slated for 2005.
