 November 2009 - Nr. 11

Toronto Operetta Theatre’s Twenty-fifth Anniversary Season gets off to a rousing start on November 21 and 22 with two Gala Concerts and the President’s Reception celebrating the company’s first quarter century. TOT is the undoubted Canadian leader in presenting the masterworks of the lyric theatre in all its variety and has over 25 years produced musical entertainment that includes comic operas, operettas, zarzuelas, opéra bouffe and Broadway musicals.

Fittingly, the Silver Jubilee Concerts focus on the number 25 and there will be 25 artists in a presentation featuring 25 of the most memorable melodies ever composed for the lyric stage. Twenty-five candles on our Birthday Cake – 25 delicious pounds of course! – and 25 delightful and surprising door prizes. Amongst the stellar line up of TOT stars will be Elizabeth Beeler, Wendy Hatala Foley, Keith Klassen, Robert Longo, Guillermo Silva-Marin, José Hernández, Henry Ingram, with Lise Maher, Catherine Rooney, Gregory Finney, Stefan Fehr, Jeffrey Sanders and Rebecca Collett. TOT is proud to present as a very special guest Arte Flamenco Spanish Dance Co. with principal dancer and choreographer Elena La Comadre. Pianists Michael Rose and David Eliakis will complete the cast. These remarkable performers will showcase the tuneful genius of Johann Strauss, Franz Lehar, Imre Kalman, Sigmund Romberg, Jacques Offenbach, Gilbert & Sullivan and many more. Performances are on Saturday, November 21 (8pm) and Sunday, November 22 (2pm) with a Special Edition of the President’s Reception following the Sunday concert.

TOT's Founder and General Director Guillermo Silva-Marin has chosen to highlight the Austro-Hungarian operetta tradition during the Holiday Season – December 26, 27 (mat), 29, 30, 31, January 2 & 3 (mat) – with Imre Kalman’s masterpiece, COUNTESS MARITZA. The Annual New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner and Dance will be on Dec. 31 at the HotHouse Café. LEO, THE ROYAL CADET, written by Kingston composer Oscar Telgmann and re-imagined by John Greer, Virgina Reh and Silva-Marin, follows on February 17, 19, 20 & 21 (mat). As the grand finale to the Twenty-fifth Anniversary Season, Gilbert and Sullivan’s all-time favorite, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE takes the stage for five performances on April 27, 28, 30, May 1 & 2 (mat).

The Silver Jubilee Season’s roster of stars includes many TOT favourites and some impressive young talent: Jean Stilwell, Fred Love, David Curry, Robert Longo, Dale Miller, Elizabeth DeGrazia, Cory O’Brien, Gabrielle Prata, David Ludwig, Lara Ciekiewicz, Jessica Cheung and Kristen Galer together with conductors Derek Bate, Jeffrey Huard and Robert Cooper will make our 25th Anniversary Season a thrilling one.
