For someone who has not been at Denninger’s Foods of the
World in Hamilton for a while the by now fabled annual Open
Houses on the Sundays before Christmas are quite an experience.
From the moment one enters the eyes are challenged to find
something missing. Everywhere the sights and tastes of Christmas
dominated the store. Delicious and delightful samples were
offered at every turn. The first order of business was a taste
of "Glühwein" (hot mulled wine) right at the entrance to the
store.

After that it was simply Schlaraffenland. Almost every
food item you can think of could be sampled by the visitors and
shoppers: a huge variety of traditional baked items, amazing
selections of cheeses, meat, and fish and jams and condiments.
Besides the mind-boggling array of foods there were big offerings
of gift items, the way we are used to from back home.
And if that was not enough, outside of the store a large tent
had been set up in the parking lot featuring many more delicious
items such as huge long sausages and sauerkraut, which were a
huge success, plus many other items to delight the palate, some
of which could also be consumed in a small restaurant area – where the "Alpen Trio" provided great musical entertainment, and
where a Santa with a huge cow bell tried to get the visitors
into a seasonal mood. He must have been successful since we
noticed many shoppers making several trips to their cars to load
their purchases. Many of them also stopped at the huge cast-iron
pan where chestnuts were being roasted. The smell alone
attracted quite a bit of interest in the parking lot in of the
Hamilton flagship store, 284 King Street.
Clearly, anyone shopping at one of the Denninger’s stores will
find their hearts desire in this season and any other.
