The Registry Theatre
in Kitchener
There was another snowfall and another jazz concert in March:
Barbara Fulton Quartet.
The singer is known from her Stratford Festival performances,
both in musicals and her own concerts. This time she was singing
Duke Ellington songs, sensuous, caressing, making you feel like
the band and the singer were performing just for you in a classy
restaurant and all that was missing was a glass of wine.
Hopefully she will return next winter.
And, by the way, Barbara Fulton accompanied by Paul Shilton will
present an evening concert in Stratford on June 27th, when it
will be summer and worth driving to enjoy the flowers and swans
on the river as well.
Nota Bene Orchestra
held Bach’s Leipzig
concert with Boris Medicky at the harpsichord and Julie
Baumgartel on violin, performing Baroque music as heard in
churches, opera houses and on the town square and played to the
faithful crowd devoted to chamber music and period instruments.
There will be two more concerts in this series on Sunday
afternoons, Classic Piano Trio devoted to Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven on April
the 10th and Harmony in
Chaos also by Nota
Bene Orchestra on May the 8th. Quality performers, excellent
selection just meant for Sunday afternoons!
Besides such classics The
Registry Theatre also offers lighter venue:
Get Back to the Beatles,
the songs of John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison had
two performances, sold out to the last seat with the crowd
definitely over 55 clearly remembering the 60's. Kevin Ramessar
and Mike Janzen sang Yesterday, Imagine, I want to hold your
hand, Let it be, and Hard Day’s Night. The crowd was swinging
and clapping along and for the encore singing along Hey Jude.
Memories from the Ed Sullivan Show came back to about a dozen
individuals who had actually seen The Beatles on stage. It was a
lovely evening, concluding with some singing and dancing in the
parking lot.
The Registry Theatre is opening its doors about twice a week for
various shows and is becoming the focus for K-W area of more
casual music suitable for smaller audiences. The list of future
shows is available on the web www.registrytheatre.com; tickets
can be purchased at The Centre in the Square or by calling
519-745-6565.
Cineplex Operas
The Metropolitan Opera broadcasting for its 5th season to movie theatres in 48
countries around the world has scheduled 12 operas for
2010-2011. Each and
every one of them has been spectacular and many people have
remarked that seeing it on the screen with close-ups and
intermission comments is so much better than watching it live
from the back of the balcony. Eight operas have already been
broadcast, with four to come. I am looking forward to
Il Trovatore with
Sondra Radvanovsky and Dmitri Hvorostovsky singing and James
Levine conducting. We are so fortunate that technology enables
the projections of operas of such quality to Cineplex Cinemas
and makes them accessible to anyone interested!
The season for 2011-12 has been unveiled and features 11
transmissions, among them
Don Giovanni, Faust
and La Traviata. The detailed information is available at
www.metopera.org
Cineplex is also
showing live broadcasts of British theatre (The
Cherry Orchard in June) as well as a Classic Film Series,
with movies such as One
Few Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,
Sound of Music or
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The details are available at
www.cineplex.com/events.
Incidentally The Barber
of Seville will be performed live by
Opera Kitchener at
the River
Run Centre on April 7th at 7:30 and again on April 9th
at 7:30 at First United Church in Waterloo. It will be sung in
Italian with English subtitles in a full staged production with
costumes, sets and orchestra. So plan for it and enjoy! Barber
of Seville is so much fun!
