Summertime in DresdenIt’s summer and all theatres and opera houses in Dresden are closed till the end of this wonderful season. But it does not mean that you will find no culture during this time. Culture changes its face for two month. Summertime means open air - concerts, movies, plays, classical events. First of all there are these great nights on the river Elbe like "Die Filmnächte am Elbufer". In front of the fantastic panorama of the historical city, Brühlsche Terrasse, Ständehaus, Schloß, and Semper Oper, - you can enjoy movies and concerts every night from July to August. There are stars performing like Simply Red, B.B. King, Amanda Marshall, Mercedes Sosa, Van Morrison, and Joe Cocker. A lot of people take part in this beautiful time. They are sitting on the meadows, drinking vine and having picnics. Dresden is a historical city and has great locations for such summer culture. The Zwinger, planned as an orange grove in 1710, a baroque beauty, is the scene for the Dresdner Musikfestspiele. Performances like Orff´s Carmina Burana attract the attention of many people every year. There are also great events in front of the Semper Oper, Dresden’s well-known opera house. Stars like Montserrat Caballé, Andrea Bocelli and André Rieu enchant the city. My favourite open-air events are the plays in the Park Theater and Stallhof. The Park Theatre in the Große Garten, our city park, resembles an old roman amphitheatre. The Stallhof was built in the 16th century as a place for knightly jousting and is now a historical scene for plays of Shakespeare, Lessing, and Schiller. There are lots of possibilities to enjoy culture during the summer. The weather is the only thing organizers cannot guarantee. Hopefully it will be a good summer for all of us. by Antje Steiger, 7.7.2000 Comments to: antje@echoworld.com |
