TWIG - They will exude the spirit of the season - but no one will recognize them. When the German Olympians parade into the stadium in Athens on August 13 they will wear not the black, gold and red of the German flag, but the light orange of the Olympic flame itself. The uniforms, which were presented on Monday (May 24) in Duesseldorf, were designed by Baeumler (men) and Betty Barclay (women). Designers Beate Katzalis and Mike Gruendel have said that they in no way wanted the German uniforms to be a reflection of the stereotypical German dresser. In fact, they intended to make an extreme fashion statement by picking a color "with Italian flair." Instead of "grey mice," they wanted the athletes to be "sparks in the flame." Germany’s business partner for the design of its competitive wear will be - as it has been for the past several Olympics - the German sports brand Adidas. All companies voluntarily participate in the Olympics by
offering their services to the athletes, without compensation. In turn, they
receive the title official clothing provider of the Olympic Games. Links: The Official Site of the 2004 Olympics in Athens
