Oktoberfest, Oktoberfest! This time we visited the Donauschwabenklub – the "Danube-Swabians" in Scarborough. They had scheduled a two-day event celebrating Oktoberfest this year. The club enjoyed a full house on Saturday - with the Black Forest Band from Kitchener entertaining the crowded hall, and again on Sunday – a full house with the Mississauga Express Band doing their best to create an "Oktoberfest" atmosphere. Actually the Nu-Tones were scheduled for the Sunday evening but had to cancel in the last minute. So Peter Beck, and three of his talented musicians stepped into the breach to help out – and the Nu-Tones weren’t missed at all! The Mississauga Express Band had played near Collingwood the night before and experienced the first blizzard of the season on their way home to Toronto. "The snow was just flying and it was very difficult to drive, until we got to about the Barrie area when it suddenly and magically stopped," explained Peter Beck. The Polonaise The atmosphere was really festive, thanks to the great sound of the band and when Peter Beck started a "Polonaise" – which is a ‘Conga’- line - many of the guests participated and snaked their way through the hall and the foyer of the club. It was enchanting! The food service was of the usual high quality, both at the dinner line of the foyer and in the well-visited restaurant of the club. "I have never had a better Filet Mignon anywhere else" said one of the diners in the restaurant, "even the vegetables and the potato croquettes were done to perfection!" By the way, the Filet Mignon was one of the two ‘Specials’ offered that day.
Of course the club has always had an enviable reputation for the quality of its foodservices, and the club’s management strives to keep it that way. As always Dick Altermann
