Opera York’s 8th Great Season

Opera in York Region has never been better as Opera York launches its 8th great season of bringing the world’s best-loved music to our community. Thanks to a cultural spaces grant from Canadian Heritage, Opera York has a new home at the St. Elizabeth Performing Arts Centre in Vaughan. The new theatre, built by COC architects Diamond and Schmidt, will open in time for the first of three productions by Opera York. In November, Artistic Director Geoffrey Butler will stage Mozart’s masterpiece The Magic Flute. Two performances will be held at the St. Elizabeth Performing Arts Centre on November 18 and 20 and one performance will be held at the Markham Theatre for Performing Arts on November 24. Featured performers include: Keith Klassen, Arlene Alvarado, Eve Rachel McLeod & Kenneth Baker with the Opera York Orchestra and Chorus. For the holiday season, Opera York is offering the children’s classic Hansel and Gretel by E. Humperdinck under the Artistic Direction of Andrew Tees. In two of the lead roles will be Mary Lou Fallis and Andrew Tees. This family event will open December 26 and run through to December 30 at the St. Elizabeth Performing Arts Centre. And in the spring, there are two one-hour productions by Puccini for the price of one ticket. Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi will be presented under the Artistic Direction of Sabatino Vacca at the St. Elizabeth Performing Arts Centre on March 19, 21 & 23 and at the Markham Theatre for Performing Arts on March 25. Tickets are $30 with a special subscription price of Magic Flute, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi for $50.
