At the annual Christmas Concert, under the direction of Linus Press, at the ‘First Pilgrim United Church’ in Hamilton, the choir presented four children that sang several traditional German Christmas songs – in German. The audience was amazed at the accent-free performance of these youngsters. Of course they did not know that their grandmother, Ingrid Oppermann, had been practising with these girls since summer – as they cannot read German yet. She also musically accompanied the "Little Angels" on her accordion.
Other performances were on the 9th of December at the Germania Club and on the 12th of December at the Continental Austrian Club in Burlington. The children in the pictures are (left to right) Jessica 3, Monika 4, Julianna 5 amd Erika 6. All four of them speak English and German and attend a French school during the day. Kudos to Mrs Oppermann for doing something that has been neglected by most of the German community – getting their offspring interested in their heritage! r.k.a.
