Lakmé, Semele, Vanessa

A summer opera series of Heroines, Tragedy and Redemption from

SUMMER OPERA LYRIC THEATRE

Toronto’s love affair with opera continues with a summer season that includes workshop performances of Delibes’ LAKMÉ, Handel’s SEMELE and Barber’s VANESSA presented by Summer Opera Lyric Theatre. The culmination of 8 weeks of intensive study, these performances take place at the U of T’s Robert Gill Theatre (214 College St., NW corner of College & St. George, entrance on St. George) from July 25 to August 3, 2008.

Summer Opera Lyric Theatre (SOLT) is Toronto’s premiere summer training programme for talented young vocalists and throughout it’s 23 years, has been instrumental in the career development of Frederique Vezina, Joseph Kaiser, David Pomeroy, Krisztina Szabo and Katherine Whyte, heard recently at the Metropolitan Opera as the Garish Lady in THE GAMBLER by Sergei Prokofiev. Under the overall direction of Founder Guillermo Silva-Marin, the participants this summer – 33 talented young artists chosen from more than 110 aspirants at auditions in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto – receive classes in musical style, ethics, acting, career development, movement, role preparation and marketing for the young professional. Guest lecturers include David Speers (Artistic Director of Opera Hamilton), Marshall Pynkoski (Co-Artistic Director of Opera Atelier), Stuart Hamilton, C.M. (Coach and CBC Opera Quizmaster), Rosemarie Landry, C.M. (Head of the Vocal Division at Université de Montréal), Catherine Robbin (Head of the Vocal Division at York University), Wayne Strongman (Managing Artistic Director, Tapestry New Opera Works) and Henry Ingram (Director of Dean Artist Management Concerts Division). Music Directors for the summer are Raisa Nakhmanovich, Michael Rose and David Eliakis. Guillermo Silva-Marin is the stage director for all three operas.

The operas for the 2008 Summer Season have been chosen to reflect the full range of operatic delights…from the exoticism of LAKMÉ to the disillusion and heartbreak of VANESSA to the Olympian bed-swapping of Handel’s SEMELE. The innovative and fully-staged presentations in the air conditioned comfort of the intimate Robert Gill Theatre showcase adventurous young Canadian singers eager to take vocal and dramatic risks culminating in performances of power and verve. "Today’s young artists must be sovereign not only over their voices but also over the varied dramatic aspects of the characters they inhabit on the stage" says Silva-Marin. "Our goal is to provide young professionals and the SOLT audience with a unique operatic experience."
