2001, artists and audiences return for the memorable moments in
music that occur on our historic stage. This season we’re pleased
to present a jazz series delivering great artists, great seats,

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON
MARSALIS
Friday, October 10, 2008 at 8 PM
Massey Hall
Hailed as "an extraordinarily versatile orchestra" by The Los
Angeles Times, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is composed
of 15 of jazz music's leading soloists under the leadership of musical
director Wynton Marsalis. Drawing from an extensive repertoire that
includes original compositions by Mr. Marsalis, Ted Nash, Ron Westray
and other members of the orchestra, as well as the masterworks of
Ellington, Mingus, Coltrane, and other great jazz composers, the
Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra's concerts are internationally critically-acclaimed.
The JaLCO performs and leads educational events in New York, across
the US, and around the globe. Venues are varied: concert halls,
dance venues, jazz clubs, public parks, river boats, and churches;
collaborations include orchestras, ballet troupes, students, and
an ever-expanding roster of guest artists. In October of 2004 the
Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra performed at the grand opening
of its new home, Frederick P. Rose Hall, the first-ever performance,
education, and broadcast facility devoted to jazz.
This concert is sponsored by TD Canada Trust.
MOLLY JOHNSON
Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 8 PM
Massey Hall
Molly Johnson has earned her reputation as one of Canada's greatest
voices. She has rocked audiences in nightclubs and bars from coast
to coast as a pop artist, and seduced the patrons of salons and
lounges with her luscious interpretations of jazz and blues standards.
Molly became the first Canadian female vocalist in the Toronto
Downtown Jazz Festival’s 17-year-history to sell out a show on the
mainstage. She has sung for a private command performance aboard
the Royal Yacht Britannia before the Prince and late Princess of
Wales, as well as performed for Nelson Mandela and Quincy Jones.
Molly started the Kumbaya Foundation and Festival, raising awareness
and funds for people living with HIV/AIDS, and she continues to
work with countless other charitable organizations every year. In
2007 she was honoured to become an Officer of The Order Of Canada.
WAYNE SHORTER QUARTET
Friday, December 5, 2008 at 8 PM
Massey Hall
Wayne Shorter's influence as a sax player has been tremendous
upon the neo-bop brigade. As a composer, he is best known for complex,
endlessly winding tunes, many of which have become jazz standards.
Mentors and collaborators include Horace Silver, Maynard Ferguson,
Art Blakey, and Miles Davis. Shorter also took up the soprano in
late 1968, an instrument which turned out to be more suited to riding
above the new electronic timbres than the tenor. As a prolific solo
artist for Blue Note, he expanded his palette from hard bop almost
into the atonal avant-garde, with fascinating excursions into jazz/rock
territory. Wayne Shorter is a veteran who has played with all the
greats, and is regarded as one himself.
