LOS LOBOS with Pistolera Friday, September 19, 2008 at 8 PM For nearly three decades Los Lobos have been
exploring the artistic and commercial possibilities of American
biculturalism, moving back and forth between their Chicano roots
and American rock. Although the band first gained fame as part of
the early-'80s roots-rock revival, they don't so much strip music
down as mix it up, playing norteño, blues, country, Tex-Mex, ballads,
folk, and rock. Los Lobos have been guests on albums by Ry Cooder,
Elvis Costello, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Roomful of Blues, and Paul
Simon. Their music has been used in the films La Bamba, Eating
Raoul, The Mambo Kings, Alamo Bay, and Chan Is Missing.
In 2001 Los Lobos was the recipient of the Billboard Century Award.
Of their 2006 Hollywood Records release The Town and The City
Louie Perez, a Los Lobos multi-instrumentalist and principal lyricist
said, "As artists, we take our experience and put it into painting,
stories or songs." Pistolera is a NYC-based
band that also fuses traditional Mexican music and with a pop-rock
sensibility. The electrifying quartet features vocalist/guitarist
Sandra Lilia Velásquez, accordionist Maria Elena, bassist Inca B.
Satz and drummer Ani Cordero. Since the release of their debut album
Siempre Hay Salida on November 2006, the band has been featured
in Rolling Stone Mexico, Billboard Magazine, The New Yorker, The
Boston Globe, Latina Magazine, El Diario, and on such top-rated
radio shows such as NPR's Open Mic, Democracy Now!
with Amy Goodman, and John Schaeffer's Soundcheck on WNYC.
The album was recorded and produced by Grammy-winner Charlie Dos
Santos in Brooklyn and has guest appearances by members of Si*Se,
Grupo Fantasma, Antibalas, and Slavic Soul Party. The band has toured
in the US, Europe, and Mexico and will be releasing their second
album on August 5 entitled En Este Camino.
ZUCCHERO Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 8 PM Zucchero, the Italian pop/blues/singer-songwriter last performed
at Massey Hall on October 4, 2007, and his immense popularly brings
him back for another concert – the North American leg of his "All
the Best" tour, which has already taken him across Europe this past
spring. Back in November 2007, Zucchero released a new greatest
hits album entitled "All the Best" with several new tracks, including
a cover of Blacks’ "Wonderful Life" and "I Won’t Let You Down" in
the Italian adaptation "Tutti I colori della mia vita". Recently,
Zucchero was chosen to perform at Hyde Park in England to honour
Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday. Artists chosen for this concert
are recognized for having voiced their support for Mandela over
the past 20 years, dating back to London’s historic Free Mandela
concert of June 1988, which called for Mr. Mandela’s release. Zucchero’s
music is largely inspired by gospel, blues, and rock music, and
alternates between ballads and rhythmic boogie-like pieces. His
husky voice resembles Joe Cocker but he developed into a more eclectic
pop style. Zucchero has recorded with the likes of Sting, Bono,
Sheryl Crow, Eric Clapton, and many others. |
