Happy New Year from Echo Germanica

Toronto, ON...BirdLand Theatre, winner of 5 Dora Awards for The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, will premiere the bold, original, surreal, thought provoking and alarmingly funny musical Assassins. Adam Brazier will direct John Weidman and Stephen Sondheim's critically acclaimed musical, which runs from Thursday, February 4th to Saturday, February 20th, 2010 at The Theatre Centre.

Part vaudeville extravaganza, part exposé, and wholly electrifying, Assassins is a dark and controversial Tony Award-winning musical about the American dream gone awry. This wickedly comic one-act historical "revusical" lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated, or tried to assassinate, various presidents of the United States. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, Sondheim and Weidman bend the rules of time and space, taking us on a nightmarish rollercoaster ride in which assassins and would-be assassins from different historical periods meet, interact and in an intense final scene inspire each other to harrowing acts all in the name of the American Dream.

Assassins features an all-star cast that includes Dora Winner Graham Abbey (11 seasons at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, CBC's The Border), Jay Davis (Evita, Tick Tick Boom, Little Shop of Horrors), Kate Hewlett (Humans Anonymous, Noble Parasites), Martin Julien (3 time Dora Award nominee, Mimi, Fire), Trish Lindstrom (Mimi, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, the Shaw Festival), Paul McQuillan (Hairspray, Beauty and the Beast, Forever Plaid), Mike Ross (Civil Elegies, Threepenny Opera, Three Sisters), Steve Ross (Orson's Shadow, West Side Story), Eliza-Jane Scott (Elegies, The Producers, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival), Christopher Stanton (The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Orson's Shadow, The Gladstone Variations), Jonathan Tan (The Princess and the Handmaiden, A New Brain), Alicia Toner (Ivan vs Ivan), and Geoffrey Tyler (The Overcoat, The Producers, Sweeney Todd, The Stratford Shakespeare Festival).

Director Adam Brazier is a Dora Award-winning actor and critically acclaimed director. Passed acting credits include Butch in The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (BirdLand Theatre), Carnivia in Cinderella (Ross Petty Productions), Dr. Frank ‘N Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Canadian Stage Company), Walter in The Woman in White (Broadway), Repunzel's Prince in Into The Woods (Broadway) and roles at both the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and the Shaw Festival. Brazier made his directorial debut with Talk Is Free Theatre's Myths and Hymns. He also directed the 2009 Fringe hit Nebraska.

Rounding out the artistic team is Musical Director Reza Jacobs known for his work with the Shaw Festival and Talk Is Free Theatre. Set Designer Beth Kates (Bigger Than Jesus, Songs for a New World, Music for Contortionists) will be transforming The Theatre Centre into a derelict fairground.
