Jesus finished his famous sermon on the mount with these words:
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into
practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The
rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat
against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its
foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of
mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man
who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams
rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it
fell with a great crash.”
Certainly Jesus does not only talk to architects and builders
with this parable. Instead he demonstrates that there are two
different kinds of people around him. The first group decides to
follow him and his words; the second faction does not want to go
beyond mere hearing. Every single human being is constantly busy
to build up his own house of life. We have plans and goals for
ourselves and for our children. We want to pursue our career and
travel to exotic places. All this is not wrong in itself – God
gave us our lives to enjoy and make the best out of it.
Nevertheless, the remaining question is on what kind of
foundation we build our houses of life. Jesus mentions in our
account that there are only two possible foundations: sand or
rock. And he is quite clear in his illustration that a sandy
foundation will not be strong enough to keep the house from
crashing down. Only a rock solid foundation will be able to keep
up with the storms and hurricanes of life.
However, what exactly is this rock foundation Jesus talks about?
The question of which foundation will keep my life from crashing
is the question about Jesus himself. What makes our life rock
solid? What gives our life security and stability? Do we trust
in our professional accomplishments and our financial reserves?
These are the questions about our foundation for our lives.
If Jesus becomes the foundation of our lives we can be sure that
we stand on solid ground. Of course, there will be storms – like
sorrows and needs and all kinds of problems – but if Jesus
carries our lives we will be capable to face these difficulties
and troubles.
