Wine and Cheese Show

Lou Wegner, Sabine & Klaus Reif"Lots of wine but not much cheese", one of the visitors to this year’s Toronto Wine and Cheese Show, at the International Centre in Malton, remarked. Well, that is partly true since the focuses of the show are alcoholic beverages. There were lots of those. Some well known, such as Reif, Konzelmann and many others from the Niagara Region. Of course there were wines offered from around the world wherever wine is grown.

Bruno Reis at the Konzelmann boothBut what I found most intriguing was the fact that a lot of food was offered as well. Gourmet spices and salad dressings, sushi, Indian fare, caviar, chocolate, jellies, Italian, seafood (Captain Johns delicious Manhattan Clam Chowder for example), mushrooms and much, much more. Simply a feast for eyes, palate and taste buds and much too much for this report.

Frank Scarpitti, Mayor Hazel McCallion & Frank WhittamoreOne new exhibitor attracted quite a bit of attention and that was the Whittamore Farm booth. A newcomer to this show, they now feature a number of delicious fruit wines to complement their other wines. The name should be familiar to our readers since we always carry their ad for the pick-your-own seasons.

Another item of interest was the shot glass, or shooter, that you can eat (Conan Imports) after you have had your liqueur. It is similar to an ice cream cone with a chocolate coating on the inside and quite a delicious novelty.

For the discerning cigar smoker, a booth with thousands of cigars and smoking paraphernalia was quite well visited. But you had to go into the "Smokers Lounge" to enjoy one of those products.

If you were interested in beer, you could visit the booths of the Brick Brewery, who featured Andechs, Henninger, Celis and Fix beer, Warsteiner the "Queen of Beers" or even Hogtown Brewery’s exhibit and others.

There were also about 15 cooking demonstrations by well-known restaurants and chefs during the three-day show and the LCBO operated a store on the premises where you could buy the product you had just tasted, to take home.

Her Worship Hazel McCallion – Mississauga’s "Iron Lady" attended the opening of the show and had a chance to partake of the fantastic buffet, provided by Captain John’s Harbour Boat Restaurant, with the representatives of the media and other dignitaries.

It was a great show again and always well worth the visit even if you are not a connoisseur of fine wines. It has been that for the last 17 years and I only missed it twice. r.k.a.
