Meeting the Prime Minister |
||
During the election campaign Prime Minister Paul Martin took time out of his busy schedule to have a conference with members of the National Ethnic Press and Media Council (NEPMC), and was the first PM in office to do so. It was important to him to impart his vision of Canada. The ever-present main media unfortunately hardly took notice of this important event and only reported that Mr. Martin was apparently tired during this event, showing a picture to that effect. Echo Germanica was invited by President Thomas Saras to ask the first question after the PM told a few poignant stories befitting a multi cultural theme.
We asked if the news that Mr. Mulroney, the least beloved Prime Minister of recent times, was consulting Mr. Harper intimately on a daily basis wasn’t helping him in his campaign. Apparently this must have been on the agenda, because 2 days after the conference the new commercials pointed this out in some way or other. Mr. Martin was extremely patient and sincere and took many photos with many of the media representatives. He showed great interest in the concerns of the multi-cultural press and promised to meet again in July (There was no doubt in his mind that he would be Prime Minister!) to discuss some equity in the way the ethnic media is handled in this country. We are going to hold him to it and congratulate him on his win. May he keep all his promises! Sybille Forster-Rentmeister
