The Barber of Seville was back!

This time this comedic classic by Rossini went all out to make it as funny as it can be. Opera York succeeded with a very entertaining version of this all time favourite opera which showcased the comedic talent of its performers.

Dion Mazerolle as FigaroDion Mazerolle as Figaro was simply delightful. The melodies and text just rolled of the tongue with an incredible ease, and the gestures all were so genuine. He even could play the guitar for real! He simply was Figaro!

Rory McGlynn as Count AlmavivaRory McGlynn as Count Almaviva was not in good voice, which became apparent as the first scene rolled into the second and so on. However, his mimic and movements were very good, even on close inspection. One had the feeling that this was the very first time he sang such a big role and was not too familiar with it. But that is what Opera York is about, for singers to try new things and stretch their wings.

Jennifer Elisabetta Fina as RosinaJennifer Elizabetta Fina as Rosina was another stroke of genius. She was perfectly well matched and a delicious counterpart to the quirky Dion Mazerolle as Figaro.

Dr. Bartolo (Gerrit Theule) & RosinaGerrit Theule did very well with his voice and stature as the jealous guardian Dr. Bartolo.

Suzanne de Grandpré as BertaSuzanne de Grandpre had a good time and did well as Berta.

Dann Mitton as Basilio and Douglas Tranquada in multiple roles were reliable and complimented the rest of the cast and ensemble well.

Busy Sabatini Vacca pulled it all together with a small but fabulous orchestra, that was conducted by Geoffrey Bottler at the performance reviewed.

The set by Frank Pasian was similar to the one presented before for this opera, but had more detail and a Moorish feeling. Costumes and all else were fine and everything appeared to run without a hitch, thus complements for the stage direction and other crew and chorus are in order.

The audience felt thoroughly entertained and that is what opera is in the end about, entertainment!
