Sony Centre for the Performing Arts breaks the Guinness World Record for Largest Christmas Stocking

New record established in partnership with Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse and Winners with help from Spin Master and the Toronto community!

Toys filling the stocking for Toronto’s children in need will be distributed by The Salvation Army

Toronto, Ontario – At 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 8, 2007 (Guinness World Record Day 2007), the Sony Centre broke the standing record for World’s Largest Christmas Stocking an hour and a half earlier than expected!

This spectacular event kicked off the holiday season and the countdown to Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, live on stage starting Nov. 20!

The final record-breaking measurements of the Sony Centre stocking built by Lowe’s were 27.46 metres (90 feet 1 inch) long and 11.3 metres (37 feet one inch) wide, heel to toe.

The old record was established on Jan. 11, 2006 with a stocking made by shoppers and staff of the MetroCentre in Gateshead, UK which measured 19.25 metres (63 feet 2 inches) long and 8.23 metres (27 feet) wide (heel to toe).

Winners, the Official Gift Giving Sponsor of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, and Spin Master each donated enough toys to fill one third of the stocking. The rest was filled with toys donated by the people of Toronto.

The Salvation Army hopes to help make the Christmases of over 12,000 children in Toronto a little more merry and bright through its holiday toy drives. They now have a great start with toys from the WORLD’S BIGGEST CHRISTMAS STOCKING!

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas presented by Lowe’s brings the infectious holiday spirit of love, charity and song for all to enjoy, making its Canadian debut at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts (formerly The Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts) from Nov. 20, 2007 to Jan. 5, 2008. Full of dancing, laughter and some of the greatest songs ever written, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas promises to be a merry and bright theatrical experience for the entire family!

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is produced by the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts and The Producing Office, Paul Blake, Dan Markley and Sonny Everett in association with Paramount Pictures. Music and lyrics are by Irving Berlin, the book is by David Ives and Paul Blake and direction by Walter Bobbie. The stage production is based on the Paramount Pictures film, written for the screen by Norman Krasna, Norman Panama and Melvin Frank.
