A Plea

Danuta Grigaitis

Who but a bird would plead with us
To air its wings in clear sky,
Who but a fish its sadness prolong
If lakes polluted and rivers dry?

Who but a mountain would stand guard in vain
Protecting valleys once green?
Gracefully mourning with you and me
For perished beauty - - yet unseen.

Who but a tree would bow down in shame
When naked its branches would stand,
Who but a flower wilt and die
Because of human hand?

Who but a child in hunger would weep
When earth no more could share?
Could we consider to stop polluting
And teach the world to care?
