The medallion that serves as a mark of
distinction to Berczy’s achievements
The 195 year anniversary date of
William Moll Berczy’s death on February 13, 2008 was recently
brought into focus by a medallion that was cast on the 250th
birthday of Moll Berzcy in 1994. This medallion brought
distinction to history of many of Berczy’s achievements on both
sides of the Atlantic
between Nördlingen, Germany and the twin city Markham.
The front side of the 1½ inch diameter
silver coin shows William Moll Berczy as a young man born as
Johannes Albrecht Ulrich de Moll.
The
reverse side of the coin bears the names of "Wallerstein-Toronto".
Markham being founded by Berczy is the twin City of Noerdlingen
to day where William Berczy’s family originated. Artist,
architect and co-founder of the City of Toronto, he has had a
city park in Toronto and Noerdlingen Park in the southern
portion of the Berczy Village in Markham, Ontario, which is
close to 16th avenue named after him. These links to
the past help broaden our understanding of the Ontario’s
heritage, while at the same time honouring the Co Founder of
Toronto and the Founder of Markham. The medallion was cast on
the initiative of Aksel Rinck, a lifetime member of the
Historical Society of Mecklenburg Upper Canada.
