Barrett Armstrong and De profundis by our own composer in residence – Tomáš Dušatko. Enjoy the exuberant music of Brazilian Ernani Aguiar with its infectious rhythms. Works by Samuel Barber, Aaron Copland, Morten Lauridsen, Imant Ramish, Nancy Telfer, Ruth Watson Henderson, and Healey Willan will also be included in this programme as the choirs take you on a musical tour of the Americas. Established in 1937, St. Michael’s Choir School was created to serve St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Archdiocese of Toronto by educating and training the boys who sing in the cathedral’s choirs. The choral program is designed to foster a lifelong interest in music and is o ne of only six choir schools in the world affiliated with the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music. The school is unique in offering an enriched academic program integrated with a lively ministry of sacred music.During its remarkable 70 years, St. Michael’s Choir School has produced some of Canada’s most enduring vocalists and performers, from the famous Crew Cuts and Four Lads of the 50’s to present-day artists such as Michael Burgess, Jerzy Cichocki, Matt Dusk, Stewart Goodyear, Kevin Hearn (The Barenaked Ladies), John McDermott, Claude Morrison (The Nylons), Robert Pomakov, and Michael Schade. In addition to the annual spring concert and Christmas concert at Massey Hall, the choirs sing at St. Michael’s Cathedral every weekend and perform publicly in an annual tour and at many local events. This year the boys will travel to the Czech Republic for the International Boys and Men’s Choral Festival in Prague. For more information please visit: www.smcs.on.ca |
