The Bad Plus is made up of bassist
Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King.
All hail from the Midwest and have known each other since their
teens. After spending their 20s apart -- King as a session
player in Los Angeles, Iverson as the musical director for the
prestigious Mark Morris Dance Group, Anderson as a prominent
player on the rise in the New York jazz scene -- they reunited
in 2000 to play a club date in Minneapolis. The chemistry was
immediate and obvious. They planned a second gig and a one-day
recording session for the indie jazz label Fresh Sound and The
Bad Plus was born. The band is known for its innovation in both
original material and creative jazz covers of established rock
tunes.
Presented in association with Luminato,
Toronto Festival of Arts & Creativity.

Emmylou has been called by Billboard
Magazine a "truly venturesome, genre-transcending pathfinder."
She is admired for her talent as an artist and song connoisseur,
but it was with her 2000 album, Red Dirt Girl, for which Ms.
Harris was awarded her tenth Grammy, that she was rewarded for
her gifts as a songwriter. Though Emmylou is the most admired
and influential woman in contemporary country music, her scope
extends far beyond it. She has recorded with Ryan Adams, Beck,
Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash, Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, Tammy
Wynette, Neil Young, The Chieftains, Lyle Lovett, Roy Orbison,
The Band, Willie Nelson and George Jones. An activist for PETA,
the Humane Society, and the Campaign for a Landmine Free World,
Ms. Harris last performed in Toronto in June of 2006. She was
just inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in April.

The Buena Vista Social Club was a
members only club in Havana that held dances and musical
activities, becoming a popular place to meet and play during the
1940s. In the 1990s, it inspired a recording made by Cuban
musician Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry
Cooder with traditional Cuban musicians, some of whom were
veterans who had performed at the club during the height of its
popularity. The recording, Buena Vista Social Club, became an
international success, and performances and interviews were
captured on film for an Academy Award nominated documentary of
the same name. The success of the album and film sparked a
revival of international interest in traditional Cuban music and
Latin American Music in general. Omara Portuondo is the female
vocalist featured in the film; Roberto Fonseca joined BVSC on
the piano in 2001 at the age of 26.
