 March 2009 - Nr. 3

Toronto ... For the first time in decades, Black Creek Pioneer Village will be open during March Break, March 14-22, 2009 with a whole slate of great activities for children at discounted, family-friendly prices. March Break Fun will combine elements of a maple syrup festival, including an all-day pancake breakfast, archaeological exploration, and pioneer life experiences, such as wagon rides, a chance to go to school in 1860, Victorian dancing lessons, maple sugar treats, and lots more. It all adds up to a perfect day out for families in Toronto and the surrounding communities.

March Break Fun will offer one special week of activities especially for children. In the Exhibit Gallery, families can watch a short film about the history of Black Creek. For new visitors, horse-drawn wagon rides are a great way to get an overview of the Village. In "The Village Discovery Hunt," specially created for this week, kids who find items along Maple Avenue receive a prize. Children can also learn about spinning "from sheep to shawl," see printing demonstrations on a restored printing press, and, of course, see maple syrup made over an open fire.

"March Break Fun is all about the kids," said Geri Smith, Marketing Supervisor for Special Events at Black Creek Pioneer Village. "The magic of the past can be very real and very immediate for children. By creating a special weeklong program and reducing admission prices across the board, we feel we’re offering a wonderful option for families during the March holiday."

"White sugar was a luxury in pioneer times," said Brent, General Manager at Black Creek Pioneer Village. "Maple sugar was much more readily available, and loved then as much as it is today." Pancake breakfasts, with real maple syrup, will be offered every day during March Break Fun in the Canada West Room from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm each day.

March Break Fun runs from Saturday, March 14 through Sunday, March 22, 2009, from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm each day. During the event, admission to Black Creek Pioneer Village will be $10 for adults, teens and seniors; $7 for children (age 5 - 14); free for children 4 and under, and free for members. Memberships available at the admissions desk.

Parking is $6.

Black Creek Pioneer Village is located at 1000 Murray Ross Parkway, Toronto (one block east of Jane St., south off Steeles Avenue, right next to York University). Visit www.blackcreek.ca/whatson for more information.
