A vibrant blend of graceful ballet and physical modern dance,
Breu and 7 or 8 Pieces for a Ballet affirm that Grupo Corpo
continues to be one of the most imaginative and exhilarating
dance troupes in the world, and a favourite of Toronto dance
enthusiasts.
Breu (2007) features a haunting original score by multiple Latin
Grammy-winner Lenine, and showcases some of the troupe’s most
aggressive and confrontational choreography to date. Infused
with polyrhythms of Latin and African dance, Breu is a poetic
reflection on the violent forces that persist around the world.
The masterpiece 7 or 8 Pieces for a Ballet (1994), is based on
eight themes written by the illustrious and incomparable
American composer Philip Glass for the renowned Brazilian
instrumental ensemble Uakti. The dancers’ actions appear as a
series of sketches, annotations or studies for choreography.
Movements come in variations, from "dirty" aesthetics resembling
rehearsals, to those of a pristine final result.
