 July 2010 - Nr. 7

After this very nice evening everyone was ready for the World Soccer Championship to start. The Hansa Haus as well as the Danube Swabian Club both had arranged for big screens, arranged food services and volunteers to accommodate the crowds that were expected to come and support the German team, which was said to be a favorite.

Meeting old friends: the Treue Husaren Toronto

As of this writing they passed the quarter finals against Argentina with flying colors, and are to play against Spain on Wednesday, which is the day our publication is delivered. Out of 5 games played so far we missed only one, the one they did not win. Good thing it was early on when it did not matter that much yet and even a 1:1 score could not put them out of contention.

These early games made the team to be reckoned with as we saw while we went along. Especially the game against Argentina was absolutely awesome. The crowds in the hall were ecstatic, as they were in the Danube Swabian Club, which also loves to see a full house, because much preparation went into these events.

One thing was noticeable: A lot of people showed up that we otherwise never see in the clubs. One wonders where they all come from. As we found out it is the offspring of 2nd or 3rd generation, now quite often seriously mixed with other ethnic backgrounds that remember their fathers and forefathers roots and suddenly want to fly the German colours. We welcome this participation!

It also has to be mentioned that the clubs tried very hard to satisfy the many visitors with food and drink. I especially enjoyed breakfast at the Hansa Haus. I never had such good scrambled eggs anywhere outside my own home! They were fantastic.

If we can carry forward this enthusiasm and if the German team plays as well again against Spain on Wednesday as it did against the Argentineans, then we might make it to the end game. We certainly hope so fervently!

Go Germany Go!!!!!!!!!!

Until next time
