Mardi Gras Fools in Action at Kitchener’s Concordia Club |
||
by Herwig Wandschneider
The Narrenzunft Concordia woke up the Jester Hoppeditz (or Hippe-dotz, can they get nothing straight?) and accompanying fools November 17 at their Gala Opening with pomp and ceremony.
The jester spent the year locked up in his coffin and seemed not at all keen to climb out of his dark and narrow confines. But once the circulation and muscles were back in running condition, he trounced about joyously and full of energy. This was the 3x11+1+1st time (for those, who are not carnivalists that’s the 35th time) that fools from the Region, from Oakville, Hamilton’s Narrhalla58, Hamilton’s 1. KG Ascendia, from Germany and Austria dropped their façade and became their other selves. Or is it the other way around? Doesn’t matter - spirits were running high, welcoming ceremonies went off without a hitch (well, almost) and performances were well prepared and gracious. Concordia’s Senior and Junior Garde delivered all participants to their head tables and sections in well-coordinated graceful style.
Including 5 foolish guests from the far away Faschingsgilden Berchtesgaden and 7 from Salzburg, who also entertained with plays and delivered and received greetings, gifts and medals. European guests were led by Norbert Butschek – Landespräsident der Karneval Vereine Salzburg, Tirol and Berchtesgaden, and Karin Schröer - President der Salzburger Karnevals Gilde. Prince Albert 1. and Princess Helga1. of Berlin (Albert and Helga Koch) together with their Hofmarschall Juergen Budczinski and Hofdame Gunhild Budczinski presided over the event in style and dignity. (That’s not easy with all those fools sitting behind and above them). They will not be de-throned for another year. Joe Lindlau’s team provided the Alaaf and Helau entertainment, or rather the music thereto, and the later dance rhythms. Being from Cologne, they know what is important in life.
Aside from the honoured guests from Europe, there was also Region of Waterloo Chairman Ken Seiling, who clearly enjoyed the proceedings. We need him to climb out of the coffin one of these years and jostle about for an evening. On the other hand, maybe not. We do not want him to sleep all year. Performances by the Senior, Junior and Kinder guards were delightful to watch. The tiniest of the Kinder Garde seemed to get lost among the seniors and Juniors, but you could not help but admire her enthusiasm and energy. Funke – Christie Wolf amazed with her Solo performance. Following the ceremonial entries and entertaining performances by various members and guests, the dance floor filled to the music of the Joe Lindlau Trio. There maybe a short interruption, but don’t go away. January 19, 2002, Concordia’s Narrenzunft carries on with the Crazy Ladies Night (did you see what they did last year? Wow!!) and exciting Maskenbälle right until Rosenmontag, February 11, 2002. Can’t fool me. That actually is a Monday!!
