TWIG - Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer congratulated former U.S. president Jimmy Carter on his selection for the Nobel Peace Price Friday (October 11). "As president of the United States of America as well as after your departure from office you have tirelessly and successfully campaigned for the peaceful resolution of international conflicts," wrote Schröder in a salutary letter. "Your outstanding and global engagement for democracy and human rights is recognized and honored around the world." Fischer also sent a letter to the former president, writing, "In many countries in the most varied regions of the earth you have helped to overcome political conflicts and smoothed the way toward peace. With the Camp David Accord in 1979, you laid the cornerstone for the reconciliation between Egypt and Israel, which to this day remains of immeasurable value and significance for the Middle East peace process. For your committed action and decisive advocacy for peace and justice I wish you continued success." |
