Time to Feel |
||
Ah, February, the month of Valentine’s Day. A month to think about the ones we hold so dear. Let me first of all take an opportunity to thank all those people who took some time to read and respond to the comments and suggestions that Sybille and I made in the last issue of Echo Germanica. There were some pertinent questions raised and I believe it takes much strength to see them and furthermore respond to such statements. Of course, everyone has busy lives, that is the nature of where we live and what business we choose to devote ourselves to. That being said, however, there must still be some time to sit back and relax and think about what is truly important to each and everyone of us. If there is no time, we should make it. I’m certainly not telling anyone how to run their lives, I’m a #1 example of a constant worker, always having to do "something", otherwise I get restless! It always seems to be a "crazy" time where time is limited. Why do we push ourselves to the limit? A rhetorical question, which can only be answered by ourselves. I would like to address a few concerns that some of you have written to myself and Sybille. You seem to be proud of the heritage, I have no doubt. Some of you have participated in the cultural events, be it as a folk dancer, singer, or simply listening to the radio or attending German school. I find that absolutely great. I did the same. However, why does it seem that when one "graduates" from these activities, the lust (auf Deutsch: Lust) to continue diminishes or evaporates. There are many explanations and to say that one is more significant than the other would be wrong. What I guess I’m asking you to do is to feel out the situation as I am here. Why is it that you feel a sense of sadness when you see the culture around you but it does not seem to be extended to the younger community? Are we asking too much here? We’re not trying to re-invent the wheel or anything. Without becoming restless, I would like to invite you, the young generation of Canadians of German descent to an evening where we can meet and exchange ideas, etc. The month of April would be a good start. Have you looked around the city? There are plenty of "German" restaurants or pubs. I have an idea of a few and will suggest our choice here, but the rest is up to you my unknown friends! Keep your eyes peeled for more details and keep your comments and ideas coming. We need you! Until next time, Elizabeth
